Ford F-150 Diesel Revealed: 440 LB-FT Punch, 30 MPG Efficiency

First announced nearly a year ago, the Blue Oval has now released full details on the sixth engine option to join the F-150 range: a new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6, developed by the same team behind the Super Duty's 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8.

For decades, the Power Stroke nomenclature has been synonymous with the Super Duty lineup of heavy-duty pickup trucks Ford produces.

The design team paid particular attention to extreme driving conditions in engineering the 3.0L diesel, according to Ford.

The first F-150 with a diesel engine is heading to showrooms this spring, and should be the first full-size pickup to crack the 30 mpg barrier when it does. The engine shares the same graphite iron block material and forged steel crank used in the 2.7-liter EcoBoost.

"The more you tow and the longer you haul, the more you'll appreciate its class-leading towing and payload capacity and how efficient it is at the pump". With 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque, the 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 powering Nissan's Titan XD is a different concept, straddling the border between half-ton and heavy-duty pickups.

The diesel will be mated with Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission, calibrated and geared for the new engine's massive low-end torque. It costs $4,000 more than a similarly equipped 2.7-liter V-6 Lariat, or $2,400 over a similar 3.5-liter V-6 version.

The 2018 F-150 now benefits from an all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel engine with 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, expanding the engine options for the F-150 to six.

. The diesel model will be offered on the XL model and the XLT model and will be offered with both extended and double-cab bodies. In more moderate conditions, the engine control system uses a viscous coupler to back down the fan's load, and close the two shutters on the radiator for better aerodynamic efficiency, as well as reduced parasitic engine loss.

The deliveries of the new truck model is expected in the spring and booking will begin this month. David Felipe, vice president of global powertrains for Ford, said he expects 80 percent of diesel F-150 owners to tow with the truck.
