Rick Snyder will call a special election to fill out John Conyers' term in the U.S. House after the lawmaker retired amid sexual harassment allegations by former staff members.

"I have a great family here and especially in my oldest boy, John Conyers III who incidentally I endorsed to replace me in my seat in Congress".

Arnold Reed, attorney for Rep. John Conyers, holds up an image of Conyers and Marion Brown, one of the two women accusing the congressman of inappropriate behavior, as he addresses the media in Detroit on December 1.

Conyers, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, will announce on Tuesday he does not plan to run for re-election, USA media said following accusations of sexual harassment against the Michigan Democrat.

Reed has said Conyers' health would be the paramount consideration in whether he decides to step down from his House seat. Grubbs is the cousin of another accuser, Marion Brown, who reached a confidential settlement with Conyers over sexual harassment allegations, but broke the confidentiality agreement to speak publicly last week.

Conyers was facing investigation by the House Ethics Committee into multiple allegations that he had sexually harassed women who worked with him.

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now". Conyers, 88, was hospitalized last week for a stress-related illness after returning home from Washington, D.C.

The announcement is expected to be made at 10:15AM Tuesday on the "The Mildred Gaddis Show" on 102.7FM in Detroit. We don't condone sexual harassment on any level, ' he said.

Conyers is one of four sitting United States lawmakers hit by allegations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the claims targeting movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which triggered a torrent of accusations against powerful figures in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics.

"I'm now in Israel on a fact finding mission with African American leaders from the Midwest", Ian Conyers tweeted just minutes after his grand-uncle's radio interview ended. When sexual-misconduct allegations surface in the private sector, a boss really can say "You're fired" - as Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose and others can attest.

"Oh, absolutely not", Conyers said.

Since the allegations, both House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Paul Ryan have called for Conyers to resign. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics".

Conyers, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who was first elected to the House in 1964, stepped down last month as the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.
