Posted November 27, 2017

KXAS reports it happened about 4 p.m. south of Fairfield on Interstate 45, citing Navarro County EMS. The chase ended when Black struck a patrol vehicle and both he and a deputy were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"The killer will face justice, and the State of Texas will continue to offer our unwavering support for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our communities safe", Abbott said in a statement.

The Waller County Sheriff's office said in a Facebook Post that the suspect, Darbrett Black, drove into the county and "shots have been fired in the area of Liendo Parkway and Wyatt Chapel". Black fled the scene and was captured in Waller County, almost five hours into a massive manhunt for him was announced by Texas authorities.

Allen is the 221st DPS trooper to die in the line of duty since 1823 and the first to die in a shooting since 2008.

'Trooper Allen's dedication to duty, and his bravery and selfless sacrifice on this Thanksgiving Day, will never be forgotten, ' McCraw said. He has been charged with capital murder.

DPS Trooper Shot, Killed In Freestone County

Texas DPS troopers and multiple law enforcement agencies cornered Black before he was safely taken into custody at about 9 p.m. Thursday.

"I am saddened to hear of the tragic death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper killed today in Freestone County", said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. He is survived by his wife and his three children.

It's not always easy for a trooper to return to his hometown straight out of recruit school, Barnes said; it can be hard for them to enforce the law in a place where they know nearly everyone.

The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Dabrett Black, of Lindale. "He was doing what he loved, and that was protecting people".

Black had previously been arrested for assault on a public servant, and attempting to take a weapon from an officer.
