New FBI director could be selected by end of week

When the appointment is announced by President Trump, a heated confirmation process can be expected before the nominee's final approval.

Cornyn's inclusion on the list came even as historically black Texas Southern University canceled Cornyn's planned Saturday commencement address amid opposition from students upset about his politics. On the Republican side, obvious potential candidates for appointment or election would be Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Land Commissioner George P. Bush and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who toyed with running against Sen.

The petition said Cornyn's backing of DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, among other things, showed that he supported "discriminatory policies and politicians".

John Cornyn is a true contender to replace recently ousted FBI Director James Comey, but his nomination would cause a major shakeup in Washington at a questionable time, Politico reports.

He is standing in for ousted director James Comey, who was sacked by President Donald Trump this past week.

Of course, this raises the question (remote a possibility as it may be) of what happens to Cornyn's Senate seat if he were to be nominated and confirmed.

More than 800 people signed a petition to protest Texas Southern University's decision to invite Cornyn, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, to speak at its Saturday commencement ceremony.

Getting confirmed as Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the Senate might be hard for Cornyn, though.

Officials also spoke with acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, attorney Alice Fisher, federal Judge Henry Hudson and former Homeland Security Adviser Fran Townsend, according to CBS News.

Cornyn has also occasionally criticized Trump - albeit gently.

The protests - or the reactions to them - often make national headlines and are something officials have to take seriously.

Now a partner at the law firm Latham & Watkins specializing in white-collar criminal and internal investigations, Fisher formerly served as assistant attorney general for the Criminal Division of the Justice Department. Texas law allows the governor to appoint an interim replacement, but only until a permanent replacement can be elected, either at a special election or at the next uniform election date (in this case, presumably the November 7 election).

Trump's sudden removal of Comey from the position this week set off a political firestorm in Washington, furling fears that the president was trying to stifle the bureau's probe into possible coordination between his campaign and Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Adam Lee, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Richmond, Va., office, was the latest to join a roster that is expected to balloon to as many as a dozen names.

Cornyn's spokesman said, "Sen".

"I think we would learn a lot about where the Republican party is likely to go", Rottinghaus says.
